Muhedin Krishti
Overview
Muhedin Sherifi (known as Krishti) was born in November 1912 in Lazarat into a family with deep patriotic traditions. He became one of the most distinguished sons of the village. He was known for his education and bravery. He made the ultimate sacrifice in the struggle against fascism during World War II.
Muhedin fell heroically on December 12, 1943. He was 31 years old at the time. He led his unit to break through a German encirclement in Polis, Elbasan.
Family Roots and Education
Muhedin was raised in a household shaped by patriotism and national service. His father, Sherifi, took part in:
- the Raising of the Albanian Flag in Vlora in 1912, and
- the War of Vlora in 1920.
Growing up in this spirit, Muhedin was an outstanding student at the Albanian–French Lyceum of Gjirokastër. He was recognized for his academic excellence and discipline.
He later continued his studies in Italy, further strengthening his professional and intellectual preparation.
Military Career and Anti‑Fascist Activity
After completing his studies, Muhedin served in the General Command of the Gendarmerie in Tirana. During his service, he became actively involved in the anti‑fascist movement.
In 1943, his role in the resistance intensified:
- he was appointed Deputy Commander of the Peza Guerrilla Unit, and
- later became Commander of the Second Battalion of the Third Assault Brigade.
In these roles, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, courage, and military skill.
Heroic Death
On December 12, 1943, during fierce fighting in Polis (Elbasan), Muhedin Sherifi led a daring effort to break through a German encirclement to save his battalion. He was killed while personally leading the operation, dying at the head of his men.
His sacrifice ensured the survival of his unit and secured his place among Albania’s wartime heroes.
Respect and Unity in Lazarat
Despite the predominantly nationalist convictions of many families in Lazarat, Muhedin Sherifi was honored without division or discrimination. His death united the community.
All traditional Lazarat funeral rites were observed in full. On December 13, 1943, the village began a seven-day period of mourning. This was according to local custom. It was an expression of unity that reflected one of the highest virtues of Lazarat society.
Legacy
Muhedin Sherifi’s name has been preserved and honored in multiple ways:
- the agricultural cooperative of Lazarat once bore his name,
- a secondary school in Gostimë was named in his honor,
- and he is remembered in Albanian folk songs.
Today, Muhedin Sherifi (Krishti) is remembered as one of the most illustrious sons of Lazarat. He is a symbol of courage. He stands for sacrifice and devotion to the homeland.
